" Geling Yan （嚴歌苓） is one of the most acclaimed contemporary novelists in the Chinese language today and a well-established writer in English. Born in Shanghai, she served with the People's Liberation Army during the Cultural Revolution, starting at the age of 12 as a dancer in an entertainment troupe. She published her first novel in 1986 and since then has written over 30 books and won over 40 awards. Her works have been translated into sixteen languages. Many have been adapted for the screen, directed by top directors Zhang Yimou, Feng Xiaogang, Chen Kaige, Joan Chen and Li Shaohong and starring famous actors such as Christian Bale and Gong Li.
